this is my first morgan bought for my type set. i got it from a moderate coin show my club put on at the casino. every one i showed said i got a good deal but i have my doubts.
A couple of things . . . it lacks natural luster, and looks like material was carefully moved across the surfaces of the coin to obscure marks and wear, and restore a new look in an attempt to make it look uncirculated. I think I see subtle pooling of material between denticles at the top on the obverse side, and between leaves in the reverse wreath.
the luster is theree its just more like a mirror there are lines all over the fields and inside the letters which i thaught was a sign of cleaning (didnt notice till i got it out of 2x2) and the mint mark looks like a blob (maybe s over s) i was told buy the main morgan collector i know that it did look cleaned but it was still a pretty coin and i got a good deal. my wifes uncle who collects morgans as well said it looked more like die polish lines. this was all at the coin show
Are you sure luster is there while having mirror a mirror like reflection? I'm thinking polishing wheel. Thanks @ToughCOINS for the clarification.
well it has cart wheel luster unlike other cleaned coins that i have seen with flat luster. if it was polished on a wheel wouldnt the whole coin be affected and show less detail
It's a common date "S" mint coin. IMO, it's worth a little more than it's melt value, but not by much.
Notice how the lines run OVER the D in dollar? If those lines were done by a mint employee they would actually run UNDER the letter D.With no trace of them on top of the actual letter unlike this one. BTW the 2nd to last photo looks familiar, if i am right you have the same wallyworld $5 cellphone microscope attachment that I have.
wasent aware wal mart had them (which aile) mines radio shack $10 i dont even want to say now what i payed for this morgan
We have ALL made similar mistakes when buying coins. If you have a chance to return it to the seller, I would do it. If not, take the opportunity to learn from the mistake. You are not the first, nor will you be the last to buy a raw coin with issues.
