Meow found a buffalo Nickel CRH yesterday. It was very dirty, and no date was visible on the coin. Meow figured it was something to return to the wild, as no date buffalos' would not seem to have any value. But Meow thought what the heck, lets clean it and see what happens. So Meow put in in a shot glass full of household cleaner, and left it overnight. Well, it did get clean; A little too clean. A date did appear, but now the obviously cleaned coin is ruined anyway. Oh well at least Meow got to know what date it was. Turned out to be a 1924p.
Hopefully Meow learned a lesson, if not, let him bang his head again. He'll learn someday. Coins are never supposed to be cleaned, not ever.
So would you have kept the coin as a no date buffalo, or returned it to the wild? Meow just had to know what date it was, if it was possible.
That'll learn ya, durn ya! Everybody knows you can't train a cat to do squat. They do whatever they want, whenever they want. There might have been a way to properly clean your nickel, but it is too late now. Get a dog! At least you can train a dog. Chris
Its your coin, you do with it what you want, I say that you got a valuable learning experience for the cost of 5¢. Can't beat that. If you Release it to the wild it may create a spark somewhere, and be a seed for a new collector. Who knows, right?
Meow did not think it would get so clean with household cleaner. Should of kept a better eye on it. But it was really dirty, and Meow was sure it would have no date on it, but it did. Maybe if Meow held it in paw for a few months, a natural patina will return?????
It looks like there’s a counting going machine damage on the 4-6 o’clock on the coin. You might get the coin to look more natural, but unfortunately, it’s still going to be damaged. In the future, you should get pure acetone and also distilled water if you’re going to soak your coins. Water first, then acetone, then back to water.
Lysol household cleaner. Putting it in a pot might bring it back to its original condition when found CRH. Then the date will disappear again maybe? Meow thinks it was passed over by other collectors over the years under the assumption that it was a slick no date buffalo. But anyway it is Meows second buffalo found CRH. Meow has been CRH for almost a year now. And Meow loves CRH immensely, and does it every day.
Don’t cats lick everything clean.lol I have some buffalos it would be nice to know the date on. Not too much of a downside I would think if the coin was technically damaged, but I’ll probably leave mine as they sit.
I hope Meow learned the lesson...never clean coins If I were Meow, I would put the coin back into circulation, considering it's still worth 5 cents no matter how cleaned it is and it may just create a new collector who finds it in change and researches to see what it is.
I put dateless Buffalos in vinegar to try and coax a date out of them. At the very least, I can get a place holder coin for my book until I can obtain a better grade specimen.
I would get rid of a cat that messes with household cleaners. What happens if the cat want to check your furnace
