I am looking to unload some of my foreign silver coins I have amassed over the last year or so. Does anyone know of an online Foreign precious metals calculator so I can get the melt value on my worn down foreign silver coins. Thanks ST
Well, I think Krause catalogs specify the ASW for every foreign coin type, which is adequate; it doesn't change, so even an old edition will provide answers. Just multiply the weight in Troy ounces times the spot price, i.e., 0.56 x $16.39 = $9.18 to get melt value. I have been selling foreign silver the past 3 months, getting 50% to 60% over melt. I post 600dpi images, and also give them a brisk rubbing with my shirt-tail, so they appear at their very best. My lots run $8 to $20, 3 or 4 pieces from the same country. See eBay #282211758736 for an example.
Online, about the easiest way I've found (I use my Krause manuals, but this will also work) is the NGC World Coin Price Guide. Numista also has similar information, as well as the World Coin Gallery. I would recommend NOT giving any coins a "brisk rubbing with your shirt-tail" - this is improper cleaning and will potentially harm anything you have that's worth more than silver. It's just a bad habit in the first place.
