On Friday night the Senate voted in favor of the Apollo 11 Commemorative coins. At this point I do not know the total of those in favor, but by the end there were 70 co-sponsors for the bill. Technically the President still needs to sign the bill, but even if he opposed it, which I can't imagine why he would, there would still be enough votes to over-ride his veto.
"Passed by voice vote H.R. 2726 – Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act" Looks like it was a very long and very busy day for the Senate: http://www.dailypress.senate.gov/ http://forums.hannity.com/showthrea...14th-Congress-in-the-wee-hours-of-the-morning
With a voice vote, I suppose we can never know the total in favor. But I can't imagine any Senator saying "nay" to a space coin -- especially with the Dec 8th passing of former astronaut and US Senator John Glenn.
Agreed. That was probably about as close to unanimous as it was going to get. Well I guess it is official now that this is happening.
Glad to hear this is going to happen. Here's another article I saw on this: http://news.coinupdate.com/apollo-1...tive-coin-act-passes-both-houses-of-congress/
Lots of commemorative items were produced to honor the Apollo moon landings, do we need another? Medallic Arts Apollo 11 Medal Copper, 38mm FIRST LANDING ON THE MOON / JULY 20, 1969 THE APOLLO 11 MISSION COMMEMORATING THE HISTORIC FIRST FLIGHT TO LAND MEN ON THE MOON If one believes that the Apollo 11 landing was faked, would one purchase these coins or support their issuance? Polls taken over the past forty years indicate that around five or six percent of Americans believe that the Apollo moon landings were faked. One of these is Donald Trump.
Gosh, Willie, I don't know. Let's see, the First time Man stepped off the planet Earth. Yeah, you're right, that's NOT important.
Most of those "fake landings" theories bare a really strong resemblance to the movie Capricorn One. Just sayin.
Here's hoping we end up with something special. I could also see that if the new $1 5 oz puck does well that perhaps it will encourage the mint to explore it further beyond the ATB pucks.
Yes! For instance, I think a 10 oz silver coin would be great. But would it require an act of Congress?
I'm honestly surprised the mint hasn't pushed for 5 oz ASE's to date since the pucks were introduced.
Does anyone know what the required texts are? Is it the following? + "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" + "E PLURIBUS UNUM" + "LIBERTY" + "IN GOD WE TRUST" + DENOMINATION + CURRENT YEAR
Check the law? https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/house-bill/2726/text Note it does not specify obverse or reverse, although the competition does indicate what needs to appear.
