Numismatics and Archeology in New Mexico My wife and I lived in New Mexico twice. The second time (2002-2003), I did not complete a directed study at UNM in Southwest history. I still have the books and as it turns out, we have a prof here at Eastern Michigan University (where I am working on a masters's) who is also a UNM person. I will have her for a couple of classes. The point is that we here in the East see the West perhaps quite wrongly, myopically, near-sighted from the crowding, you might say. First of all, think of it as "The Spanish Borderland Frontier." The Mexican-American War coincided with the failed revolutions of 1848 in Europe. The result was an influx not just of Anglo Anglos, but Germans and especially Jews. I have a xerox of a newspaper clipping from the 1890s, where some KKK yahoo was waxing eloquent about how God gave the Desert to Christians and Jews and look what we have made of it since we came here. The one thing that those Anglos had in common with each other -- which also differentiated them from the Catholic natives -- was the Masonic Temple. The locals called it "The Anglo Church." The frontier west has always been an equalizer where whatever prejudices you bring stop applying when your neighbor keeps his word (or not), helps out (or not) and forgets about it (or reminds you of it). New Mexico sent the first woman to Congress -- before women could vote in federal elections. Numismatist know that the first woman governor Wyoming's Nellie Tayloe Ross was later the Director of the US Mint. Wyoming appointed Ross governor to out-shoot TEXAS which had ELECTED a woman chief executive, not yet sworn in. I heard a "Fresh Air" interview where Terrie Gross demonstrated a severe lack of perception attempting to interview Lynn Cheney who was funding a "Cowgirl Hall of Fame." I referred in another thread to a Roman coin found on the banks of the Rio Grande. The woman who brought it to our coin club was told by an "expert" that it was probably dropped by a pioneer and was not left by a Roman. But when that coin was struck, the river was wet to its source. The Folsom points (spear heads) found in New Mexico match the Mousterian points of France 300,000 to 30,000 years ago. New Mexico in particular and the West in general enjoys a wealth of history unappreciated by the coasties who call it "flyover." I accept empirical evidence prima facie.
