I work at a coin shop and found a similar coin in his token junk box. However, it's hand carved on the smoothed obverse of a large cent. Furthermore, there is a name and inscription reading, "Elra Brown Jerusalem Chapter No. 8 R.A.M." If anyone knows anything about Mr. Brown or the Jerusalem Chapter any reply would be great.
Can you post a pic. The hand carved nature sounds really intriguing and I'd love to see this piece. I suppose R.A.M. is for the Royal Arch Masons.
I do not have a picture of the coin...It's in a 2x2 at the shop. Also, I'm supposing it's hand carved...It is NOT struck! The reverse is in at least XF. I actually went to the Stack's page and emailed David Bowers hoping he could supply some insight. I had done that before and it worked....this time it didn't. I'll try to get a picture in a few weeks. The shop is closed for the week. Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for the links. I've been to them before and they offered little help. I couldn't find anything on a smoothed obverse of a large cent. Thanks again.
The Jerusalem Chapter No. 8, R.A.M. is located in New York City, New York. My ref. on Masonic Chapter Pennies lists an id # 4212 which sounds very similar to yours by being made from an engraved large cent (of about 1854). The name engraved on the one listed is S.E. Nelson. It would be hard to tell what it may be worth without a picture, as the quality of the engraving is a large factor in determining value.
Thanks for the information. I do have pictures...I just have to get them loaded. Should only be a day or two.
That is a cool little token, and from your father, no less! Welcome, oh receiver of the source of the next Nicholas Cage movie!
Numismatics and Archeology in New Mexico My wife and I lived in New Mexico twice. The second time (2002-2003), I did not complete a directed study at UNM in Southwest history. I still have the books and as it turns out, we have a prof here at Eastern Michigan University (where I am working on a masters's) who is also a UNM person. I will have her for a couple of classes. The point is that we here in the East see the West perhaps quite wrongly, myopically, near-sighted from the crowding, you might say. First of all, think of it as "The Spanish Borderland Frontier." The Mexican-American War coincided with the failed revolutions of 1848 in Europe. The result was an influx not just of Anglo Anglos, but Germans and especially Jews. I have a xerox of a newspaper clipping from the 1890s, where some KKK yahoo was waxing eloquent about how God gave the Desert to Christians and Jews and look what we have made of it since we came here. The one thing that those Anglos had in common with each other -- which also differentiated them from the Catholic natives -- was the Masonic Temple. The locals called it "The Anglo Church." The frontier west has always been an equalizer where whatever prejudices you bring stop applying when your neighbor keeps his word (or not), helps out (or not) and forgets about it (or reminds you of it). New Mexico sent the first woman to Congress -- before women could vote in federal elections. Numismatist know that the first woman governor Wyoming's Nellie Tayloe Ross was later the Director of the US Mint. Wyoming appointed Ross governor to out-shoot TEXAS which had ELECTED a woman chief executive, not yet sworn in. I heard a "Fresh Air" interview where Terrie Gross demonstrated a severe lack of perception attempting to interview Lynn Cheney who was funding a "Cowgirl Hall of Fame." I referred in another thread to a Roman coin found on the banks of the Rio Grande. The woman who brought it to our coin club was told by an "expert" that it was probably dropped by a pioneer and was not left by a Roman. But when that coin was struck, the river was wet to its source. The Folsom points (spear heads) found in New Mexico match the Mousterian points of France 300,000 to 30,000 years ago. New Mexico in particular and the West in general enjoys a wealth of history unappreciated by the coasties who call it "flyover." I accept empirical evidence prima facie.
OK. Here are the shots of the Masonic Penny I've been talking about. I've also included pictures of a Spanish (I think) token I found. Any information and valuations will be very much appreciated.
Nice engraving on the Masonic piece. Its hard to place a value on such items though as no price lists exists for most exonumia. A typical masonic penny usually brings $10 or more on ebay, but one engraved on a large cent is a much less often seen item. With the nice engraving and a specific name (which I imagine could be researched), I would think your item to be worth more than a stock token, but I would hate to hazard a guess as to how much more. I only recall seeing one other done on a large cent, and that was some time ago. Sorry I could not be of more help, and I do not have any info on the other token.
Thank you so much for the information. I'll have to get back to my boss and let him know so we can figure some price for it. The other token has me totally stumped. We have others at work. I'll try to get some shots of them up and running.
Hi.. just found this page, thought I’d ask a question.. pasted down in my family is a Masonic One Penny coin (or token) Found lots on the internet but nothing in my specific coin. It’s a chapter 58 chartered dec 13, 1867. HTWSSTK... ?? I know the meaning of the letters but does anyone know anything else about this coin? Thank you!!
Billa13 It is a Royal Arch coin. RA is a masonic body in masonic York Rite. I had mine a couple of years ago. All I can say is that in the old days, back when the body started, people had their hand cut off, this is because only the truthful owner of this coin may use it. Just by looking at the picture, assuming it belonged to your father, it means nothing but that he acquired it the usual way, just buying it. These coins have a purpose, and a very specific detail. Also, every coin have a secret, but your coin its just that, a simple coin.
Billa13 has only posted twice, both on April 10, 2018. And hasn't been back since. So I bet he will not see your reply.
