I seen this coin somewhere before but I can't pin it. I know it's damaged coin, anyone know what this is called or who stamped it? Never thought I would find one haha the back looks like something is stuck to it so I'm not posting the picture of the obverse
in celebration of the US Bicentennial 1776 -1976 ... 200 years https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Bicentennial and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Declaration_of_Independence
Lol...... oh goodness. Woweeee haha I never knew that's what bicentennial meant hahaha... now that's embarrassing lol
Yep. Counterstamp done for the Bicentennial. These were advertised in all the coin magazines- I started collecting that year. Seems rather trivial now, but since I was a ten-year-old kid in 1976, I thought they were pretty cool then. Actually, they're still kinda fun, in a cheesy sorta way.
1976 was a very meaningful year because it meant that us old-timers would be blessed with about 14 years of peace and serenity before you were born. Just kidding, Tyler! Chris
I thought that defacing money was a crime lol. How could it be legal to stamp a circulation coin and make money for it lol. I never did understand that one that flattens your coins and stamps it with something lol. How's that legal? Lol I love em cause I love odd ball coins lol
Another Bicentennial fad was to paint fire hydrants red-white-blue. Fire departments eventually began to object.
Personally I save any counterstamped coin I find in the wild. I wouldn't dare spend a premium on one, but if I happen upon one I find it a cool little novelty to diversify the collection.
Nope perfectly legal for coins as long as you are not doing so with the intent to defraud, or you are melting cent or nickels. You can beat the cents and nickels to a pulp if you want, you just can't melt them. Oh and you can't put advertising on them. Paper money on the other hand is s different matter. Defacing the currency in such a fashion that it can not be reissued IS illegal.
I was a kid then and remember them being glued to cheap rings in the vending machines. Eventually the kids grew up, found the rings and pulled the pennies off and spent them. Lots of them still have traces of glue or even paper on the reverse.
Lol mine has the glue on the back. Meant to say the reverse in the post don't know why I said obverse cause I know the difference lol
When you speak to someone do you actually say laughing out loud to them? Not all conversation is funny. LOL annoys me.
