It’s been one of those weeks already where I’ve been WAY busier than I anticipated. Being an officer of the club (secretary), I needed to be there as soon as we could get in the building. When I got there, there were already few of the local club members bustling about preparing for the onslaught of dealers who had already started to line up at 6:30…7:00 AM is usually check in time. Originally, I was told I’d be checking vendors in, but our immediate past secretary was already hard at work getting ready for that. This freed me up to get my stuff in and set up.</p><p><br /></p><p>[ATTACH=full]470480[/ATTACH]</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>I brought my son along, I figure any time he wants to tag along is alright with me. Originally we had planned on my wife bringing him buy a 9 AM when the show started, that way he could get some extra sleep the day before the school week started, but he begged and begged to just come with me in the morning, so we agreed.</p><p><br /></p><p>[ATTACH=full]470481[/ATTACH] [ATTACH=full]470482[/ATTACH]</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>As soon as I got sat up I had dealers walking over to take a look. One dealer in particular, who was two tables down from me, ended up buying my 1965 (still in the blue box) SMS set from me and then as he looked through some of my other stuff ended up buying a couple of nice war nickels, LMC proofs and dimes off me as well. The rub, he’s an error\variety guy <img src="styles/default/xenforo/clear.png" class="mceSmilieSprite mceSmilie11" alt=":rolleyes:" unselectable="on" unselectable="on" /> so I’m sure I was being cherry picked…maybe not though<img src="styles/default/xenforo/clear.png" class="mceSmilieSprite mceSmilie6" alt=":cool:" unselectable="on" unselectable="on" />. I had met this dealer at the last two previous shows and he had a particular IKE that I just loved, but was asking too much, I felt. I asked him again this year if he got the coin sold, he said he still had it but was willing to let it go for my price…so I ended up with it (this will be a GTG thread here soon). The good part, and this is why I did this, was that I got his card, email address, and made another good acquaintance in the biz. He has been an attributer with ANACS and NGC and has worked directly with Wexler in writing Wexler&#039;s quarter book (which I didn&#039;t really know existed). Bit of a dry personality, but from what I’ve discussed with him he knows his stuff, which is good. Does a lot of IKE stuff.... <img src="styles/default/xenforo/clear.png" class="mceSmilieSprite mceSmilie8" alt=":D" unselectable="on" unselectable="on" /></p><p><br /></p><p>As the show progressed and the hounds were released, I actually saw more traffic at my table that I thought I would. Another good dealer friend, who is always really good about selling to me at Gray sheet bid, or even under when he can, was three tables down from me in a different direction, which made it easy for me to go down and make a good deal on some type coinage. I am hoping to travel to his home this year, at least once (he’s about two hours away), and do a larger buy with him.</p><p><br /></p><p>One thing that I did not anticipate was that I had more people stop buy than I thought I would. I asked my brother to help me man my table, and with my son there too, I thought I’d be able to get out a bit more, but I just wasn’t able to. I was able to get a couple tables down to fill a hold in my Washington Quarter Collection (1943 D) but that was it! So knowing that, now it’s going to be a balancing act between how many shows I want to do and how many I want to just go as a collector\buyer.</p><p><br /></p><p>One thing that I had a ball with, tho, was Drew, my son. He had brought some of his coins along and was going to try to do some trading…well things weren’t moving for him, so he decided he’d walk the floor a bit. Red book in hand, he headed out. About 30 mins later he came back with a 1987 P&amp;D Washington quarter set. The dealer let him have them for half price. Using his Red book, Drew felt that the quarters were in MSS3 – MS64 range and that if he could sell them for that then he could make a profit. So he priced’em, put them on the table, and waited. A few minutes later he was hungry so he stepped away to get us lunch. While he was out, I purchased….eh hem…some kid came by and bought his quarters <img src="styles/default/xenforo/clear.png" class="mceSmilieSprite mceSmilie11" alt=":rolleyes:" unselectable="on" unselectable="on" /> I had to give him an early win…get that excitement moving. I won&#039;t do that all the time, but I gotta prime the pump. Well with more money than he started with he was stoked. He decided to put all the other coins he brought out on the table for sale, after he priced them with the Red book. It was fun watching him do the research and looking at the coins, then back at the book and then contemplating…really fun.</p><p><br /></p><p>Well later that afternoon, while things were still movi’n-n-groovi’n I saw this guy walking by and I flagged him down. I told him since this was Muncie, I had had to get the only famous well known numismatist in photographic form for my report. I had already been over to his table and had said hi to him, Sam Schafer and Evan, but I figured I’d get Matt over to my table for a pic…and he graciously agreed.</p><p><br /></p><p>[ATTACH=full]470483[/ATTACH]</p><p><br /></p><p>Here’s how freekin cool this guy is, he sits down at my table and as I’m making apologies for the *VERY HEAVILY* modern laden table of mine (we all know what Matt things about moderns right [USER=307]@mikenoodle[/USER] ) he starts looking at the coins my son had laid out. Somehow he strikes up a conversation with my son and Drew explains that he’s already made one sale. Well before I know, Matt is pulling his money out of his pocket and tells Drew, “well…good I think I’ll buy this $6 Kennedy off of you!”</p><p><br /></p><p>[ATTACH=full]470484[/ATTACH]</p><p><br /></p><p>You talk about making a kids day…and making a dad’s day. What a stand-up guy. Really, to support a kids experience like that speaks volumes to the kind of dealer Matt is. I actually sold about $300 bucks worth of stuff…now that’s not profit, just sales, but I felt it was a good day. I feel I made some good contact with folks and I am definitely going to try to do more of this.
