Was at the LCS today and bought a few things. I picked a 1919 and 1923-S WLH out of the junk silver bins at $11 each, and I cleared out the shop's supply of bulk Wheats - usually, it isn't very high. This time, there were 113 in the bin, and after a quick look through I bought them all. $0.03 each. On to a rundown of what was in those 113 coins: 1889 IHC (VG/F) 1909 no VDB 1911 lamination 1911-D 1913-D 1914-S (F dets, environmental damage) 1915-D 1916-D 1917-S 1918-D 1918-S 1919-D 1919-S 1920-D 1920-S x2 1921-S 1923-S 1924-S 1925-D (weak MM) 1925-S x3 1926-D x2 1927-D x2 1927-S 1928-D x2 1928-S 1929-D 1929-S 27 Philadelphia mint coins from the teens/20s 14 steel cents (5 reprocessed) Haven't checked for any varieties yet, update possibly to come. I think I may log my future Wheat Cent searches in this thread.
Initially, when I pulled the 23-S, it looked like this: It took me a while to realize how nice the details were on this coin, and that the coin was just dirty. So I set it aside and decided to use acetone on it. 4 hours of acetone and a few q-tips later, and this is the product: The stuff left over on the obverse is verdigris from the looks of it. Maybe try xylene next?
Just searched a bag of 211. Found: 1909 no VDB 1913-D 1915-D 1915-S 1917-D 1917-S 1918-D 1918-S x2 1919-D 1919-S 1920-D 1920-S x5 1921-S 1933-D Other Philly teens and twenties x11 Pics of the 15-S (going into Dansco):
Can you please do me a favor and tell your guy that I’ll happily give him $0.04 for these and we can cut you out of the middle?
