Thanks for that PhotoScape tutorial btw, it really changed my pictures!

Someone mentioned the British 50p coins celebrating the 2012 Olympics and I finally got round to scanning one for you. There are 29 in all, each design in a different style. Someone else was keen on Weightlifting, so that is the one I have scanned.

Apologies for the quality of the picture - it is a loose plastic wallet, and does not lie flat and so does not scan well.

Thanks for posting that one PaddyB - I'm the one interested in weightlifting too. I've found several interesting coins that I'll be adding to my weightlifting collection - some are much rarer than others including some Russian ones from 1980 and 1991 (or is it 1979 and 1990...). That 50p will certainly be part of my collection.

The best or most intriguing one, in my opinion, is the football coin. :) While I did not want the entire series, that one I just had to get ...

It looks like the USSR & Russia have put out some nice Olympic commemoratives in the past (not sure about the present). Their set from 1978 and then from 1990(?) feature a weightlifter but they're looking pretty hard to come by.

To Jwt708 - the weightlifting 50p is quite common on Ebay - you should have no problem picking one up from there at prices from GBP 0.75 upwards. Postage to the USA will cost you more than that!

To chrisild - the offside rule in football (or soccer as it would be called in the USA) is a standing joke in England. It is almost the definition of masculinity - or at least blokishness - that you know the offside rule, and of being a wimp or a nerd if you do not! The Olympic coins for 2012 were designed through a national competition, and I think even the judges saw the joke in characterising football entirely on the offside rule.

PaddyB - Ya, seen 'em on eBay and fully plan on getting my hands one very soon.

1976 Montreal. I know these pictures don't show it that well but the light just dances up a storm on these surfaces. I really love these. Enjoy...

Pretty much the same here in Germany. :) Loved the comments which said, once the coin was issued, that what the piece depicts is not 100 percent correct. Gee, so what. I like it!

Currently they are issuing a series of coins about the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Here are the 2011 pieces (scroll down to the bottom). Each coin name (Biathlon, Hockey, etc.) is a link to a page with an image and further info. Won't buy the Sochi 2014 pieces, but what is interesting about them is that they have the "full" eagle of the Russian Federation, not the eagle that the central bank uses (and usually puts on coins).

    Not an olympic coin...

...but an olympic die. From memory $50 + $5 shipping. COA, cap, velvet bag and the original advertisement. No packaging or invoice. I thought it was just a cool item and used it for a paper weight on my desk.

A few years back several surfaced on the Bay and went for $1400 to $1500. As more appeared the prices went down to $500 to $600 as Matt mentioned in this or another thread.

It's been said this is the first and last time any die that's not completely defaced will be offered. I can't however confirm this.

This one was retired because of "starburst."

    Eventually I'll pick up a tennis commemorative to go along with the die. {been saying that for a long time}

The poor quality images were taken by my MacBook camera.

Google Images search "1996 OLYMPIC COIN DIE" will provide nice clear pics and avoid any copyright conflicts here.

One more Olympics British one before this thread dies - minted in 2008 for the handover from Beijing. Also a football one from 1996 - nothing to do with the Olympics, but football seemed interesting to other posters!
