I've got the two Merc overdates in small, older ANACS holders. I want to cross them over to NGC holders. Is there a general expectation of how that is likely to go? -- end up with a lower grade -- end up with same grade -- end up with a higher grade Basically, what was ANACS grading standards like at that time?
Old tiny anacs slabs are, for the most part, accurately graded by today's standards on average. However they had loose standards for pl/dmpl back then compared with today's standards. I wouldn't automatically think they'd upgrade as most that can have been picked over plus the tiny slabs add a bit of a premium themselves. Are you wanting them in ngc for the registry?
It's entirely dependent on the coin itself. A lot of people have a belief they're basically all undergraded but most of the coins that would have upgraded have been upgraded already unless it isn't worth the price difference to do so. There are also coins that have sat in collections the entire time who would have a better chance at upgrading, but the ones that have hit the market a few times have probably already been tried or a lot of people felt they wouldn't. They likely have a better cross over rate than some other services and generations of their slabs, but no guarantee they will
I agree, possibly AU53-55 & XF40, These may get the ol' bump up, I have no idea what the rule of thumb on merc overdates is..... Nice coins
Hello, I also have the older anacs holders and some rare morgans in the ICG holders. What is anybodys thoughts on ICG? I know today they offer a 30 day turn around for $12.
Icg referred to as a second tier grading service like anacs. Anything beyond that might as well be raw. Many people think it stands for I can't grade. Myself I've never submitted a coin to any but the big 2 and when you see me at a show everything pretty much is pcgs ngc or raw
To clarify, the majority of coins in small white Anacs slabs (Morgan's especially) are accurately graded. There are exceptions, just like w the other big 2
AU55, VF30. I had a lot of trouble selling coins in ICG holders for anything like appropriate money for the grade on the holder. If you feel the coins in ANACS holders are accurately graded, you'll probably get the same grade on them from either of the big two. I've posted here before about some PCI (!) coins I submitted to PCGS for crossover. I thought the coins in the PCI (old, green labels) holders were accurately graded, and PCGS concurred. Several came back with the same grade, one AU58 PCI came back AU55, and an AU58 PCI came back MS62! Motto: Buy the coin, not its grade on a tpg holder.
I have several other coins that I want to get graded, but if recovering the right value in these other holders is a problem, then maybe I should pay the extra and get them graded by the big 2. Thanks for your advice.
ANA days (gold hologram) are close to modern standards, but have been picked over unless really new to the market. Amos days (hologram is the big A in either red or gold) are not as accurately graded
And the real answers are (envelope, please): 1942/1 is graded AU-55 (I can believe that) 1942/1-D is graded XF-45 (I think that's a stretch; possibly market graded)
