Pretty rough condition, especially the CSA Deuce. If you don’t mind me asking @Joy Matherne, what did you pay ?
I know I try to look up in advance as much info on what I'm bidding on at any auction or estate sale. Whether looking up the details if available on the auction house website prior, or google it when looking them over before bidding. It seems you're impulse buying without knowing anything about what you're bidding on? I know it's hard sometimes to keep that hand down, but sometimes you just gotta say no.
I rather think you did OK. Twenty bucks to own some authentic civil war relics is a steal in my book. I could care less about the condition or resale value. That is irreplaceable American history.
I always advise collectors, especially inexperienced collectors, to steer clear of problem notes. Heavily soiled, torn, taped, ink marked, and notes with pieces missing detracts from the notes design. I prefer quality over quantity. Nicer, high quality notes generally hold their value better than problem notes. You can label me as a currency snob, but that’s always my advice. It was only $20, so no big deal.
