All so wrong, malta was never part of the russian empire, and Paul I was never grandmaster of the knights of malta
Umm, has anybody here ever claimed that? Scroll down to #72 in this list: http://www.orderofmalta.int/history/680/the-79-grand-masters/?lang=en Christian
The knights of MALTA, were governed by grandmasters 44-71 in that list, any grandmaster before and after did not rule the knights of MALTA
Well, he can still be considered a Grand Master of that order then (or a "de facto" grandmaster as the order says). It's just that the Order of Malta (and thus whoever its Grand Master was or is) has, since that time, not ruled in or over Malta. Would it be OK to put it that way? Christian
REALLY?!:dead-horse: And what about the election of Paul I on the post of the Grand Magister of the Order of Malta's knights in St. Petersburg at 1798? Look at the Wikipedia. Count von Hompesh was the applicant on this post too. But when this count have abdicated from his claims, Emperor Paul I became the only elected Grand Magister. :sniper:
Look I am Maltese, I know my history well, I suggest you don't look at wikiepia for such info cause its full of errors, you should go for books like Malta u x ghaddha minghaliha. A grandmaster was only elelected when the one before died and Hompesch definetly did not. Secondly a grandmaster had to be a knight from the langues (lands owned by the order) and the order never had lands in Russia, so Paul was not even eligible for the post, not even a knight of the order.
Jefferson Davis wasn't elected by a whole American people. But he has the status of the president of CSA. Paul I was elected by the big part of members of the Order in St. Petersburg at 1798. It's a historical fact.
Secondly. As You know, when the Grand Magister Fra Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim (1797-1799) has abdicated from the throne, Paul I became the only Grand Magister de facto. Here is the list of Grand masters from the book "Sovereign Military Order of Malta modern coins (1961-): complete descriptions - 2008 -" by Charles R. Hosch. Look at the number 72: "de facto Paul I Empereur de Russie (1798-1801).
And, at last. When Paul I was the Grand Magister, he made 118 administrative territories of Malta's Order in Russia. So, during his reign Malta's Knights has a possessions on the Russian territory de jure.
Did they ever put a bird of prey on their coins? I've been looking for a Maltese Falcon for a while, and making do with a Maltese Farthing...
Yes, but the "Maltese Falcon" coins are gold pieces. 10 pounds 1975; there are two types as Malta changed its coat of arms in that year. But the falcon is the same. http://www.anythinganywhere.com/commerce/coins/coinpics/malta-k35-1.jpg Not my image as I do not have that piece. Christian
It is true that some knights elected Paul I but he was not a knight of the order so he was not eligible for vote and secondly the council of the order never approved him, its like if the priests in conclave elect a priest who is not present (and hence not eligible to become pope).
But Grand Master von Hompesch has abdicated from his post. And all sourсes named Paul I as "the Grand master de facto". Jefferson Davis was the president of the separate state CSA. It was unrecognized state. But in all sources he named as "president of CSA". Paul I wasn't a knight of the Malta's Order. But all sources named him "Grand Master de facto".
