Actually the first one came out in 1946. I bought one then and have every year since. I now have every one to present. From info from Dennis Tucker, Publisher, Whitman Books, the actual release of the 1947 Red Book in 1946 is the reason today the issues all come out almost a year in advance. For example in April of each year is the release of the next years date such as now we have the 2011 Edition and it's 2010.

Way, way back I didn't know there was anything but the Red Book so started buying them each year to keep up with my massive coin collection. Of about 100 to 200 coins back then.

Now every year I buy about 10 of the Ringed versions for Christmas Presents for people, keep a few for usage. One hard cover goes onto a shelf in a book case with all the others also not opened.

Inspite of the listings in the present Red Book, 2011 version on pages 408 to 411, old Red and Blue books show up in used book stores and flea markets all the time for usually $1 or about that. I've seen one seller ar a flea market with about 100 Red Books and all in the area of the 20th to 30th Editions for $1 each. All were hard covers and most look new. There are some with missing pages and one with an upside down page that are supposed to be worth a lot too. I think Whitman is getting carried away with all those special editions like Leather covers, large printed versions, etc.

The only time I open an older version is when someone on a coin forum asks how much was a certain coin way, way back. Don't know why I collect those things since ever selling the entire pile would hardly be worth the space they take up.
