Saved from the Recycle Bin I keep my 1962 "15th Edition" Saved from the Recycle Bin several times during Spring Cleaning purges and fun to compare with current issues.....making me ponder....."I wish I Knew Then what I Want to Know Now." My 2009 issue looks like a coffee coaster from abuse as I tend to use it instead of preserve it.
I'm a nut over most any coin book. To me a new book is just at much fun as a new coin if not better. Long story but I have about 600 Red and Blue Books from 2006-2008. The postage would cost more than the books are worth. What would you guys do with this many. Give me some cool ideas.
Perhaps someone would know this... all of the annual coin values in the Red Books, can they be found or purchased someplace digitally... say in a database or spreadsheet format?
I actually gave away a few hundred over the last 2 years. I tried to give them all to a local dealer if he would give them out to the kids that came in his shop for free. He would not do it. He wanted to make money on them. I tried to sell him on the idea that lots of these kids would keep coming back to his shop in the future but all he could think of was short term profit. I'll find something to do with them.
Larry, donate them to a library, or a local coin club. I am meeting up with an author of a coin book this weekend and he is donating some redbooks and some of his books to the club I am in. I will give some away to members, etc.. find something to do with them.
Actually the first one came out in 1946. I bought one then and have every year since. I now have every one to present. From info from Dennis Tucker, Publisher, Whitman Books, the actual release of the 1947 Red Book in 1946 is the reason today the issues all come out almost a year in advance. For example in April of each year is the release of the next years date such as now we have the 2011 Edition and it's 2010. Way, way back I didn't know there was anything but the Red Book so started buying them each year to keep up with my massive coin collection. Of about 100 to 200 coins back then. Now every year I buy about 10 of the Ringed versions for Christmas Presents for people, keep a few for usage. One hard cover goes onto a shelf in a book case with all the others also not opened. Inspite of the listings in the present Red Book, 2011 version on pages 408 to 411, old Red and Blue books show up in used book stores and flea markets all the time for usually $1 or about that. I've seen one seller ar a flea market with about 100 Red Books and all in the area of the 20th to 30th Editions for $1 each. All were hard covers and most look new. There are some with missing pages and one with an upside down page that are supposed to be worth a lot too. I think Whitman is getting carried away with all those special editions like Leather covers, large printed versions, etc. The only time I open an older version is when someone on a coin forum asks how much was a certain coin way, way back. Don't know why I collect those things since ever selling the entire pile would hardly be worth the space they take up.
Carl: Of course the first edition was released in 1946, along with both printings. However, most inquiries are less technical, and I didn't want him to go searching for a 1946 edition. As far as your old copies, feel free to send them along to me. I'll take good care of them.
I'm not into Redbooks, but I have some old coin books. The two oldest are close in age. (1858) Tradesmen's Cards, Political Tokens and Currency (1861) Coins, Medals, and Seals, Ancient & Modern, W.C. Prime
That dealer should have done it. That's just crazy he can't make that much from his sales of them. Plus the return of those people would be worth it. As for collecting them I have 9 years now I think so a long way to go but I'll keep looking I don't pay hardly anything so it's still a neat set to go for. As for new ones I don't purchase them every year either lol Just when they get old and outdated and cheap
^^^^^^^^^^^^^ My 1963 has no page 237 and does have page 239 instead. The book is in good overall condition. Just wondering what it is worth? Thanks.
Victor: Well, it depends on the condition. In used the 1963 regular edition is perhaps $1 or possibly $2. So, about $3 to $5.
Those sound fantastic. If you ever get a chance, try taking a photo or two of them and posting them here. You may want to photo copy those and put them on your computer and print out some copies just in case. Something that old may start to get brittle so using a copy may be more logical.
At my age I update my Will frequently so I'll mention you for those. Sort of a shame that my kid will get all this STUFF since he has absolutely no interest in coins or coin books.
