I was not talking about Liberty Nickels because there is 3 of them that I can sort of see, maybe, well not much but if you say so okay.
Each to his/her own but I still think the whole thing is just crazy. We just don't deal in coins that ruined much down here, anyway that I have ever seen esp. Buffalos that's just fodder for the Indian belts and buckles at 7 cents each.

In all seriousness, my home town had a sand pit and their biggest customers were the Arabs. Their sand does not work well in their swimming pool filters. REALLY!

Borgovan, I think if you look in Google or other search for "work hardening" or "stress hardening" of nickel, it might make more sense. It isn't so much a change in density, but a change, it appears, in the crystal arrangement of the metal under force , such as from striking such coins, and as mentioned in one of RLM's posts, the date area is an area that is more susceptible to this hardening than the surrounding fields.. I think this was discussed in another thread, I can't find, but not all were in agreement, but I find this explanation more satisfying to me. When annealed, nickel has a low ductility, but when stressed, it hardens significantly.
