I bought these two coins at a garage sale but I have no idea what they are. I haven't taken them out of their old 2*2s yet. I will take some better pictures later tonight.
one is a kuan ei tsu ho from japan... http://www.moneta-coins.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=672&title=kuan-ei-tsu-ho-japan&cat=683 if it isn't the one with the reverse symbol, that's still what it is...some don't have them. i'm not sure on the other one....
The coin with one character on the reverse is indeed from Japan, obverse inscription is Kanei Tsuho, reverse character "Bun" is a mintmark for Edo (Tokyo). This type, based on the mintmark and details of the "kan" and "ei" characters, was first issued in 1668 and was probably issued for a while afterwards, until about 1700 or so; it is quite common today. The coin with plain reverse is tougher to ID, because of the poor condition. I _think_ it may be from China, end of the Ming dynasty, Chong Zheng (1628-1644), but I am not as certain of this one.
