Well, (Obols aside), I think that my favourite 'pig' is this Vespasian. VESPASIAN Emperor, Father of Domitian, Titus, Domitilla (the younger), Coin: Minted 77-78 A.D. Obv: CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, Laureate head left, Rev: Sow walking left with three piglets, IMP XIX, in ex., Silver Denarius 18mm. 2.7gm. RIC II. Rome 983 (109);
Nice Pig/Boar coins! Alas, I do not have any....missed a beauty last Roma Auction! Too compensate, here is a "Winged Lioness" on a really crudely struck EL Stater from Mysia/Kyzikos circa 500-450BC, 16.28g./21mm. obv. Winged Lioness/Tunny Fish rev. Quadripartrite Incuse Punch
I have been wanting one of these for years but never found one in a price I would pay that showed the piglets as clearly as I would like. These get extra interest in the market as anti-Jewish types of the man who destroyed the Temple. That raises the price and cheapskate me walks away.
I'm not sure that has anything to do with it - the type is quite unusual and attractive regardless. But the piglets always seem to be rather simply drawn, even when you get a full strike. Doug, if you were willing to be just a little less of a cheapskate, you could get a coin like this for around $3000. Gemini IX, 283
Nice! That OP porker has a lot of attitude. Mine doesn't look as tasty, but still, it looks like someone took a nibble off the flan. Some of my other favorite pigs/boars: Good ol' Hosidius Geta stuck pig. Acorn-chomping Sicilian Nero dei Nebrodi of Abakainon. And finally, the Great White Sow of Lanuvium, plus bonus piglets (same mythical beasts as shown on @Topcat7 's coin).
Wow Gandalf, sorry I'm late to the party ... fantastic OP-addition (congrats) => oh, and awesome thread additions by the usual suspects!! (great boar coins!!) Ummm, I have a few humble examples to toss-into this thread ... First => a boar counter-stamp (Tiberius) Ummm, followed by a fairly humble example of everybody's favourite (boar & lion) ... yah, it's a bit hard to see ... but that is a boar in exergue (under the crazy Celtic horse) A very sweet example (in my opinion) of hound attacking boar ... Oh, and I also love this RR-example of Hercules & Erymanthian Boar ... Then there is my archaic confronting boars (photo by TIF, Inc) => and last, but not least => the nude dude being attacked by flying pig!!
AHA!!! So that's where that old saying ...Yeah right, when pigs fly.." came from That's a wonderful coin Steve!!! As usual the CT gang always have such terrific examples!!
Compromising one whole piglet produced this Titus. The show had two for about the same price but the other was Vespasian and a bit worse than this one.
Here's another sow, not nearly as nice as my semis but when I saw that this little piggy had gone to market so cheap I couldn't pass i up: Roman Republic Æ quadrans(18.4 mm, 5.33g). Anonymous(Sow series), 206-195 B.C., Rome mint. Head of hercules right; behind ••• /Prow right; above, sow and ROMA; before, •••. Crawford 121/6; Sydenham 254c.
