Should I got all silver or all gold? Or maybe a mix of both? I currently have 1oz maple, 20 ASE, and, 20 Austrian philharmonics in my cart, totals comes to $2874. Or I can drop the gold and get more ounces of silver or I can drop the silver and just get another ounce of gold? Also why is the gold maple leaf coin cost over spot so much less than the AGE or buffalo? $40 vs $75
AGEs and buffalos are more liquid than maples and hence the slight premium. People in general are more comfortable buying the American minted stuff, especially if you're in the US.
If I had the 3k to spend I would get a mix. Maybe even throw some platinum in there if the premiums for it aren't too bad.
ONLY if you are in the US. I dare say the Maple Leaves might be more liquid in another country, say Canada. OP, personally I would buy coins with low premiums you find attractive. Might as well be a "collector" of them too, since that is the only "return" you get from PM until you sell them.
I'd try to find a 1934 S peace dollar in MS 63. IF not fractional platinum and than silver libertads.
Yea but they are usually children or teenagers. Also, precious metals are fairly liquid making them a good way to avoid inflation while having an emergency fund.
I disagree with the Eagles over Maples comment. If I could find someone willing to sell Maples at spot, I'd buy them up like crazy... four 9s might not seem like a huge difference to three 9s, but when dealing in 100 ounce lots, that's basically a "free" $5 modern eagle.
Support America, Buy American! Hypothetically your advice sounds great but who is going to sell Maples at spot? In 100 ounce lots, there is $3 more worth of silver.
Not to mention if for some reason silver completly crashed ML have a higher face value than the ASE. I don't ever seeing that happening, but you never know. But then again if silver completly crashes like that I am sure we will have a lot more financial worries than that.
Yeah, that would suck. If silver crashed down to $5 an ounce I would barely have made a profit in my silver holdings.
Assuming this is cash to burn, and that you have an adquate cushion separate from this, as well as supplies and what not, I would allocate 80% to silver eagles, 15% to fractional gold eagles or maples (9999 fine, slighly better purity, and usually sealed), and 5% to fractional platinum eagles or credit suisse or pamp suisse bars, roughly. If you already have some gold and platinum I would just do all silver eagles. If you already have a lot of silver eagles then right now I like 2013 Fiji takus, 2013 Somali elephants, 2013 kookaburras, and any Candian Wildlife series close to spot.
