My advice would depend on what relationship you conceive possibly developing with the coins in the future. If there is absolutely no interest in learning about or doing anything with the collection, have an independent party perform an appraisal, tuck them away, and pay your insurance premiums.

If you think you may become involved with the coins, as I imagine your uncle was, buy the couple of above mentioned books to help you grade and value the coins. Be prepared to develop more than a passing interest in them though if you decide to take this route. I recommend giving this a try (you can still have them independently appraised if desired), and even involving the godson in the hobby.

The more background he knows of the coins, the more meaning it would hold for him when he receives them. I know involvement with coin collecting as a lad was a help to me in history classes as well.

You have been given a great deal of good advice. If you decide to become involved with the collection and come up with any questions, I would recommend visiting a coin club as was mentioned. Since I am not terribly far away from you, I offer my assistance to you as well (gratis of course).
