Well Congrats to you Mr. Slamster.. you were the first to post the right note and followed up with the Fr# 242. This was the only $2 Hancock I had in my collection and was the design of choice for my personal stationey as well. I posted the Portrait of him as my Avatar as a hint..all you had to do was go to Heritage and look up my former collection. The Notes Portrait was Engraved by Charles Schlecht and the reverse was engraved by E.M. Hall, S.S. Hurlbut, D.M. Cooper and L. Delnoce. Winfield C. Hancock held the Rank of Commanding General of the US Army for 20 years!! Send me your address in a PM.. The Star note is yours..and will go out on Monday!! RickieB
Congrats Slamster!!!! Now would someone mind explaining how to find a Fr#? I really dont know anything about notes but now I'm actually interested!!!
Thanks for the contest Rickie! Sent you a PM! Google was my best friend on this one, Zach, and Rickie's avatar too...
Zach... I am so happy to hear this. Welcome to Paper Money!! May your journey be as rewarding as mine is.... RickieB
Thank you, it's really amazing how in 25 minutes I went from caring less about bills but now I want to know more!!! All that searching ignited something!!!!
An Author and friend, Mr. Gene Hessler has a great resource book Titled: The Comprehensive Catalog of US Paper Money...It is a very nice book and 1 of several I still use to gather information on Banknotes and engravers. Go get a copy..enjoy it!
I will do that!! Where can you find some inexpensive notes that go in a collection? What do you collect?
Well Zach: You can start by doing a search for Paper Money Dealers. There are several auction houses as well like Hreitage, Lynn Knight, Bowers and Merina.... As for me, well I had some choices to make a while back and I did what I thought was right. I now still mantain a collection of Small Size Banknotes from the New York Fed Reserve Bank of New York... witin this collection, I hold $1 thru $1000 notes from 1928 thru current Series. Have a very long way to go to finish as it will more than likely take me all my remaining lifetime to attempt. If I can ever answer any questions for you, then by all means ask. There are many here in our Paper Forum that can help you get a grasp on the wonderful world of Paper Money. Good luck and good hunting.. www.donckely.com is a great starting place for you as well. Best regards, RickieB
Thanks, Rick. Mighty generous. You were the one that got me going on paper, too. I've got some odds and ends, but don't know where I want to go with it yet. Gravitating to large size notes, though. Some real nice art work in those. Small size, not so much.
Rickmp: I know your delima. The Large Size Notes can sweep you away into another world. Some excellent notes of the time preceeding US Small Size. However, current small size is ever changing as well and while similar in many ways, the quality of the early small size is staggering compared to current. I wish you success in your collecting endeavors. Please post images of your notes when you accquire them, it is always great to see new Large Size.
