Wow, some dope at the mint in Rome REALLY blew it! Where was the Quality Control? Where was the pride in their work? What the heck; how could a Mint Official let this GO??? There were supposed to be THREE Moneyers RESPONSIBLE for the proper mintage of the Res Publica argentum!!! I mean that this is a radical departure from conventional denarii with a januform dioscuri on the obverse instead the normal head of Roma... However, this denarius was SUPPOSED to commemorate the Roman victories over the Allobroges and Arverni in Gaul 121 BCE by Cn Domitius Ahenobarbus and Q. Fabius Maximus (Allobrogicus) Lucky them and LUCKY me, I was able to pull this FAULTY DOUBLE-STRUCK coin out of circulation so none of the Moneyers would be shamed! See what I got? Roman Republic AR Denarius - DOUBLE STRIKE M Furius L F Philus 119 BCE 19.5mm, 3.9g OBV: M FOVRI L F, laurael head of Janus REV: Roma standing l, crowning trophy with carnyx and shield on each side, star above Roma, ROMA to r, PHILI (PHI) in monogram in ex. Crawford 281/1; Sear 156... But, NO! They don't list THIS double-strike aberration! My Quality Control Engineers spent a lot of time reviewing the mistake and did some detailed comparisons to prove out this anomaly... This is what should be more of the standard: Roman Republic AR Denarius - hmmm...more normal... M Furius L F Philus 119 BCE 17.2mm, 3.4g OBV: M FOVRI L F, laurael head of Janus REV: Roma standing l, crowning trophy with carnyx and shield on each side, star above Roma, ROMA to r, PHILI (PHI) in monogram in ex.
