I'm exhausted from a long two weeks and I am going to bed. I'll post Thursday's happenings tomorrow. One experience I had today was BIG and I will post it on a separate thread.
Wednesday We continued to photograph coins Wednesday morning. I experimented with various lighting techniques. Lighting is critical in coin photography. Doug Mudd (ANA Museum Curator) spent an additional 3 hours with us in the afternoon demonstrating the use of PhotoShop to edit a coin photo. This was extremely helpful for me. I should be able to use what Doug has taught me to finally learn how to use PhotoShop Elements. The Session II YN Auction was held Wednesday night and was very successful. $20,000 was raised for the YNs. (I think the total for the two auctions was around $34,000. That's enough to pay for scholorships for around 28 YNs to attend Summer Seminar next year.) One item that I bought at the auction was a private viewing of some of the ANA Collection Rarieties. Four spots were sold and I was one of the lucky four. I will start a new thread to tell you about what I got to see. Thursday The last day of Summer Seminar is here. We spent the morning polishing our coin photography skills. The instructor downloaded our photos and burned a CD of all the students' photos for each of us. We wrapped things up in the afternoon and received our certificates. I learned a lot in this course, most importantly different camera set-ups and lighting methods. Once I buy a nice copy stand and some lights I will be able to put this knowledge to use and perfect my coin photography skills. I'm sure in the future I will be posting pics that are the fruits of this course. Thursday night was the reception and banquet. The food was excellent as usual. Like Bill Fivaz last week, JP Martin was given a Doctorate of Numismatics. He tried to hide his emotions but it was obvious he was truly touched. (I got the impression this has made him rethink his decision not to teach Counterfeit Detection after this year.) Larry Shepherd (ANA Executive Director) announced an agreement has been reached to settle the lawsuits against 3 former employees and a contractor. This was excellent news. With that the 2008 ANA Summer Seminar was over. I learned a lot in my two courses and made several new friends. Now I'm looking forward to next year.
Hobo - thank you so much for taking the time to convey your experiences of ANA seminars. It was very helpful to get a first hand account and will help me and others consider these classes in the future. I wonder, after being immersed in these details so rapidly, what your long term retention/recall rate will be. It seems that there was a lot of information taught over a compressed timetable. I can't wait to see your pictures, especially how your cameo half comes out once you fully apply all that you've learned! Again, much appreciated info!
Nice reports, very thorough! Guess who this is: To find out the identity of the subject, please visit my ANA Summer Seminar sketch book webpages, and look at the snapshot photos, too!
Your image does not appear on my screen but I remember meeting you at the Session II reception and seeing a few of your sketches. (You were completing Cary's sketch at the time.) Great idea auctioning off the sketchbook for the YNs.
Thanx. The links should work. I had to complete Cary's hair, since earlier in the day my pen had run out of ink.
