    Hi Pete!

    These are your coins:

    Hi zumbly!

    (1) Caracalla, Crescent with 4 cross-shaped stars, HrHJ (2018) 8.18.48.18 corr. (same dies, but writes ANTΩNIN). I would like to add your to Nikopolis Addenda #6.
    (2) Severus, Domna, HrHJ (2018) 8.14.34.32 (same dies)
    (3) Severus, Snake, HrHJ (2018) 8.14.22.12 (same dies)
    (4) Elagabal, Pan, HrHJ (2018) 8.26.18.1 (same dies). Rare (R7). An interesting rev. I have the same type.
    (5) Elagabal, River god, HrHJ (2018) 8.26.32.2 (same dies). But 2nd OV of POVΦOV not ligate! I have the same type.

Actually "same dies" is not much worth because these types are struck in only small quantities in contrast to imperial coins.

    Best regards

Hi, @Jochen1 , I hope you don't mind me resurrecting this thread, but I am having difficulty finding this exact reverse die in online references. It is similar to AMNG I 2104, Moushmov 1488, and Varbanov 4146a, but it has different legend breaks and peculiar ligatures in its reverse die.

Do you have a reference for this exact reverse die?

    Gordian III Nicopolis Nimbate serpent.jpg
    Gordian III, AD 238-244.
    Roman provincial Æ 27 mm.
Moesia Inferior, Nicopolis ad Istrum, Sabinius Modestus, legatus consularis, AD 241-244.
Obv: ΑVΤ Κ Μ ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟC(block form C) ΑVΓ, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust, right.
Rev: ΥΠ CΑΒ ΜΟΔЄCΤΟV ΝΙΚΟΠΟΛЄΙΤ-ΩΝ(ligate) ΠΡ(ligate)ΟC ΙCTP, Nimbate figure of snake-god Glycon, coiled and facing right.
    Refs: C.f. AMNG I 2104; Moushmov 1488; Varbanov 4146a; H&J 8.36.22.3; Mionnet Suppl. 2, 708; BMC --; Sear --.

It appears to be a double die-match to this one, which CNG attributes to H&J 8.36.22.3. Is this a correct attribution???

    Dear @Romancollector!

Thank you for your request. Here is your coin:

    Obv.: AVT K M ANT Γ-OPΔIANOC AVΓ
Bust draped and cuirassed, seen from behind, laureate, r.
Rev.: VΠ CAB MOΔECTOV - NIKOΠOΛEIT / ΩN ΠPOC ICTP
Glykon snake on rod in 2 coils erecting r.; head surrounded by nimbus
    Ref.: a) not in AMNG
    b) Varbanov 4146 corr. (same dies, but writes A in error)
    c) Hristova/Hoeft/Jekov (2018) 8.36.22.4 (same dies)

    Notes:
    (1) AMNG has only the type "Snake erecting in several coils, head with nimbus r.", No. 2104
    (2) Varbanov basically does not consider legend breaks or ligatures. But on the depicted coin you can clearly read AVΓ without ligature.
    (3) Because Hristova/Hoeft/Jekov is a work in progress and a new updated edition will be published every 1-2 years, it is necessary to always note the year of the edition.
    (4) The coin from CNG is a double die match to your coin.

    Best regards
    Jochen

@Jochen1 Can you please help me attribute this one? It is quite worn and my pictures aren't good, but I am including two for each side with lighting from opposite sides. If better ones would help for the attribution, I can ask my husband to take better ones.

I think it is Macrinus - Zeus seated, Nikopolis ad Istrum, upload_2020-9-27_22-43-45.png upload_2020-9-27_22-44-32.png upload_2020-9-27_22-44-56.png upload_2020-9-27_22-45-13.png

    Dear @cmezner!

Thank you for your post. For sure it is Macrinus from Nikopolis ad Istrum with Zeus on rev. This motive is known from 3 types with nearly the same depiction on obv. and. rev.:
    (1) HrHJ (2020) 8.23.1.2, struck under Pontianus:
But here PR - OC is distributed across the field in contrast to your coin.
    (2) HrHJ (2020) 8.23.1.3, struck under Marcus Claudius Agrippa:
Here the shape of the ties is different and the K of AV K is located on the left at the level of the bend of the left tie upwards while on your coin it is to the left of the top of the left tie.
    (3) So your coin is type #3, struck under Marcus Claudius Agrippa too:
obv. [AV] K OPPEL CE - [VH MAKRI]NOC
    Laureate head r.
rev. [VP AGRIPPA NI - K - ]OPOLITWN PR / OC ICTR
Zeus in himation enthroned l., resting with raised l. hand on long sceptre and holding in extended r. hand patera
ref.: a) AMNG I/1, 1683 (2 ex., Gotha [Mionnet], Vaillant)
    b) Varbanov 3371
    c) Hristova/Hoeft/Jekov (2020) 8.23.1.4

    Best regards
    Jochen
