Awesome! That was fun Here's a Helena I have with a pretty cool doo. I believe it was posthumous, which is why she looks so glamorous and she doesn't look so much like a turtle as she often does. Hehe Helena Augusta, AD 324-328/30. Æ Follis Heraclea mint, 2nd officina. Struck AD 329-330. Diademed and mantled bust right, wearing necklace / Securitas standing left, holding branch; SMHB·. RIC VII 85.
I have always been impressed by the style variations available for Helena. That will make a good thread someday when someone wants to start it.
lrbguy said: ↑ @@Ryro give yourself a gold star!!! Yes, in 326 three mints issued coins for Fausta, bearing her name, which were styled to look more like Helena. It is likely that this was done after the order to blot visage her from public life had been given. Why those three mints and no others continued with her name for one more issue is not clear, but RIC lists the bust type for these as E10, the same as for Helena, whereas the normal bust style for Fausta is A6. @jamesicus: For comparison .......... Killingholme Hoard (Trier Mint) - 324 to 325 O: Helena diademed bust right - FL HELENA AVGVSTVA R: Securitas standing left - SECVRITAS REIPVBLICE Killingholme Hoard (Trier Mint) - 324 to 325 O: Fausta bust right - FLAV MAX FAVSTA AVG R: Fausta holding two infant sons - SALVS REIPVBLICAE
Here's a new coin purchased after seeing the great coins in this thread. It's not near as pretty as the OP coin but for $25, a good buy. It's also from an unlisted officina (Delta). Fausta, AE follis, Nicomedia. AD 325-326. FLAV MAX-FAVSTA AVG, bare-headed, mantled bust right, wearing necklace. SALVS REI-PVBLICAE, Empress standing facing, looking left, head veiled, holding two children in her arms. Mintmark MN Delta. RIC VII Nicomedia 130; Sear 16553.
Just picked this one up this evening. I placed a bid some three weeks ago and forgot about it and was pleasantly surprised by the email notification that I had won. It's from the Sirmium mint, just like the OP, but not as well preserved. It was much less expensive, though! I've cropped the photos of the slab and combined the image and processed as much of the background away as I could. I can't wait to crack this baby out of its slab and take a decent photo.
Holy hell that is a phenomenally nice reverse!!! Just... wow. I'm glad I didn't come across it. I have this "strategy" that when I see a coin I really want I bid ten times current bid. It's nice but I wouldn't have been exactly happy to find that I'd won it in the four digits. Let's hope the buyer's remorse on this one isn't that bad for whoever the winner is. Here's a pretty sweet Fausta coming up if you want to try your luck again: https://www.sixbid.com/en/gorny-und-mosch/6437/romer/5358800/romische-kaiserzeit-fausta-307 Rasiel
