I got plenty of old and odd coins while working at a convenience store, but this one has to be the weirdest. It's an 1861 British half penny. How it ended up being spent in a podunk gas station in rural Oklahoma is a mystery. I accepted it as a quarter (as it is slightly larger than a quarter) and paid a quarter with it. I assume the customer thought it was a quarter (or knew what it was and tried to sneak it past me). It's obviously been well circulated but when did it cross the pond?
Now that's a true Penny! Maybe some kid got into his dad's old world coin collection and started to use it to buy simple stuff.
A token supporting the new world order was my weirdest thing I found in circulation, I found it in the Coinstar reject tray. My weirdest coin in circulation was an 1869 dime sized 40% silver coin from Austria-Hungary. I forget the denomination at the moment. I also found an 1859 indian head cent in VF condition in 2013.
Few years ago, my wife and I were Roll Hunting Half Dollars, (I was on temp disability and really hammered checking for silver to set aside for retirement since we were not making much money.) We found TWO British Pennies (late 1800's and 1941 King Edward VI) within the rolls over a 6 month roll search period! Shocked that they could had been mistaken to be rolled in with Half Dollars. Odd that both of these Pennies made it into circulation and to be sent by the banks and rolled. Fun, and worth approx $10 each. No big value find, but fun and unusual!
Unlikely it got well-worn in U.S. circulation. Maybe it came home with a U.S. GI after WWI or WWII. Anyway it's a VERY cool find!
Naw, just a guestimate when I looked them up. I will never sell them and will pass on to my Grandkids. What do you think they would be worth?
I have found half a dozen plastic play pennies in roll searches - bank wrapped so they went thru coin counters
I've found 1 in a half dollar roll, 1890 something. A half was worth more. But it was a very cool find.
