    I agree. This is what I understood. It is a myth, as far as I know, that they simply melted down shell casings and made cents from them. It was the alloy used that mirrored shell casing metal (aka Brass) that gives the cents their name.

    Even if they recycled some brass casings, they likely smelted out the copper and then made the alloy. Or, they could have tossed some shell cases into the melting pot, I suppose.

    In any case, if I remember my history correctly, WWII occurred in Europe and the Pacific, not in the US. I seriously doubt that the govt was paying to ship spent cartridge cases back to the US. Ones used for training here in the US would have been a drop in the bucket, I think, compared to what was needed for coinage.

    It's been in my grandfather's possession since the 50's.

    Unfortunately it's not 100% perfect. It looks like mold is growing on it. No idea how to take this off.
