[QUOTE="tomfiggy, post: 2247705, member: 51884"]Doubled letters, numbers, other features are bigger than normal features because they are doubled. If there is a feature with a line through it it does not make it doubled. doubling "doubles" the width or height or something to make the features larger than a normal coin.

This 1984D Doubled die. Listed as Coneca die #1, and Wexler's die number two shows doubling on the date, and the bottom of the bust. Extra thickness and distortion on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY. Notice how all of these features are larger than the "normal one". The normal one is the bottom image. Look at IN GOD WE TRUST. See how the normal coin's letters are normal looking? Now the top image look at GOD and compare them. This coin does not have extreme doubling but it is a sought after DDO. Here is a link to some better pics of the coin.

http://www.varietyvista.com/1984DDDO002 cent.htm

After the die for the lower coin gets old and worn it will make weird looking letters like your nickel.
