This is a coin that I posted a month or so ago. This is a fourré tetradrachm patterned on the Attica tetradrachm of the 4th century BC. It came by way of an Israeli coin dealer late last year.

When I received it, the coin was totally encrusted, with absolutely no indication of any detail, other than the general outlines of Athena's portrait and the outlines of the owl on the reverse. I've been carefully working on removing the surface deposits using distilled water, toothpicks and cotton swabs.

Here's where the work stands right now. I'm probably at the point where I need to stop.

Some interesting detail is beginning to appear on the obverse.

There appears to be a curved line, almost the shape of the Greek symbol for omega, and there also appears to be a standing figure beneath it, facing left. Both of these elements appear to be part of the coin's design; they do not appear to be parts of a counterstamp.

Could the figure represent a local deity or ruler? What's the consensus? Am I experiencing a flashback from the days of my reckless and misspent youth?

    Thanks
