Since the show is after the auctions I follow, I am sure I will be too broke to make it worth attending the dealer show. But I will probably come into town for Triton, if they have something interesting. I still have a piece of gold to pay off in the meantime.
Bumping this thread since it's getting closer to time. I'm planning on bringing my extra copies of Vecchi 3 and Vecchi 6 - two catalogs that make an excellent addition to the library of any collector of RR bronzes. Vecchi 3 in particular is not in prime condition as it had some water damage before I acquired it and has several of my notes written throughout but both are perfectly usable and free to a good home if anyone can use them, all I ask is that you be a collector interested in RR bronzes.
I"ll be there - it will be a short visit - will arrive on Friday afternoon, meet some people on Saturday morning and fly back on Sunday night. Back in the office before lunch on Monday, all going well. I expect to get to the bourse on Friday and Saturday and cram in tourism the rest of the time. ATB, Aidan.
Similar to my plan. Arriving Thursday night, bourse on Friday and tourism Saturday afternoon. I'm heading back home Sunday morning. I've never been to NYC so I'm really looking forward to it.
Not sure if anyone here read my thread about Surprising VAuction Win, but I accidentally blew my entire coin budget for the NYINC, so it looks like I'm going to have to sit this one out. Too bad; I was hoping to meet up with some collectors. Maybe next year.
I last visited NYC when Nixon was President and The World Trade Center was under construction. I loved roaming the streets and found the people quite pleasant. I knew where to get good food cheap. Something seems to have changed.
Still plenty of good cheap food if you know where to look for it. And the people are still pretty nice as long as you avoid the Lexington Avenue subway during rush hour; a bit Darwinist then.
I will not be there, I have never ever attended an auction in person. BUT, I have enough funds left to get a couple of nice coins. Problem is, the earlier ones I had my eye on, are already beyond my reach, but with so many in the Stacks/ CNG/ Heritage/ Baldwins....I am sure to snag a couple for my coll., if that does not work out, there is a Kunker Auction end of Jan. too.
Let me recommend two days if you are not into shopping. Go on Sunday, January 7th, for the auction previews. Auction previews are great. I attended the previews for several years before buying anything at a live auction. It is a good way to develop your eye. 9am-7pm Heritage preview 10am-5:30pm M&M Numismatics / Dmitry Markov / Ira and Larry Goldberg / Soverign Rarities preview 1pm-7pm Classical Numismatic Group Triton XXI preview On Sunday you can also witness the live Heritage auctions at 1pm and 6pm. It is interesting to see how it is done if you have never been to a live coin auction. You are likely to get free auction catalogs, a $50+ value. You also get get the chance to inspect very interesting things you wouldn't otherwise see. CNG will probably give you a nice calendar illustrating a high value coin each month. Food can be had cheaply in Grand Central Station which is adjacent to the new location. The food court is great, the Oyster Bar is also great, but if you are busy an excellent bagel is $2. Go on Saturday, January 13th, for the educational sessions. $5 with coupon. 10am Ancient Coin Collectors Guild w/Peter Tompa 11am Association of Dedicated Byzantine Collectors, Robert D. Leonard, Jr on "Andronicus Comnenus's Invasion Money of 1181-1182" Noon Medal Collectors of America with Dr. Lawrence Lee on "The Crane Collection of Indian Peace Medals at the Denver Museum" 1pm Colin Pitchfork on "The New South Wales Holey Dollar and Dump of 1813" 3pm Kyle Ponterio on "Carrillo Countermarks and Their Methodical Manufacture" 4pm British Numismatic Society w/David Vagi on "Roman Coins and the Province of Britannia" 5pm Oriental Numismatic Society (three short talks) 9am-5pm Stack's-Bowers-Ponterio Auction Lot Viewing 9am-6pm Baldwin's of St. James's Auction Lot Viewing 9am-6pm Spink USA Auction lot viewing Again, free catalogs at the lot viewing and a chance to personally inspect rare items. I am sure you know how difficult it would be to see these education programs at any other time. I will be attending the Oriental Numismatic Society talks; I may attend the other ones if I exhaust my budget too quickly.
As this is, I believe, the first time that the NY show and FUN show (in Tampa) will be on different weekends it will be interesting to see if any of the major dealers attend both venues. If anyone is going to Tampa I will see you there.
I was able to attend 2 years in a row a few years ago. I had a great time!! No auctions for me though. Just hanging out and shopping on the bourse floor. The number of and quality of coins for sale blew my mind. It was the first, and second big show I had ever been to. To all of you that are going, have a great time!!
Even though I am not far from the meeting place, I will not be attending. I hope everyone who attends enjoys!
My wife and I arrive Monday afternoon and will stay about a week. Saturday looks like the busiest our day: ACCG meeting, lunch meeting, two auctions, and plenty of coins to see on the bourse. Vicki will have a class and lecture from two of the big names in the knitting world. The Marriott will be full of the stuff below.
AAARRRGHH, Oh! The yarn! But I must behave and resist! I am saving up for something very important. (That is pretty sneaky, @rrdenarius to put that photo of delicious yarn up there!)
@paddyman98 - coming out to see you would be fun! I would so enjoy meeting you - and we definitely should! Let’s! But it won’t be this event. I really am saving every dollar. LaContessa does not ride the subways so parking alone - and lunch - that is a nice little chunk towards my goal that I would not spend. But, really, we are so close, let us meet in the Spring?
