Come on medoraman I was expecting you to know what the 1863-S half dime mintage was off the top of your head. Or maybe the 1918-P Buffalo nickel? Seriously I would have been supremely impressed had you rattled off a couple of non-key date mintages. Honestly i realize they are useless for day to day knowledge, but I had this weird image of you literally studying the book until it fell completely apart whilst trying to memorize all of the mintages. Maybe even repetitively writing them like copying lines style to retain the info. I was just poking a little fun
Not gonna lie I had to look it up to confirm the one I was thinking, but it was the 1916 D Mercury dime
I'll give you time, here is another: Lowest mintage (for circulation) non-gold coin [US] of the 20th century?
Its ok. I used to know most of the by heart, (not stuff when it got into the tens of millions or gold though). I don't anymore. I just remember "key" ones like the 16d dime, VDB cent, etc. I thought I was doing pretty well with those, considering I haven't collected US coins for 15 years now! I said I used it as a BASE of knowledge, not that I still remembered it all. I still remember the tough coins in nearly every series, though. Quarters are brutal, every series except for Washington has a brutal stopper.
Tell me about it, I chose a monster when i settled on the Seated Quarters for my big set. I just put the stoppers in the unattainable category, I dont want them in my collection if I cant afford the grades I want anyway. Im targeting about 85%-90% completion on that set and I will feel accomplished.
1913-S Barber Quarter with a mintage of 40,000 that were actually made for circulation. I also know that you have a penchant for that coin. How's that Frank?
Seated quarters? Good gosh, talk about a glutton for punishment. Pretty coins, but like 10 just brutal coins. I looked at them, but settled on seated halves instead.
I would recommend that you collect a series that you can complete. I have learned (the hard way) that it is the key date coins, or the stoppers, that I never had any problems selling and usually, if I did my homework before I bought them, I realized a nice profit when I sold them. The common coins, sometimes were difficult to find buyers for and often sold for less than I paid.
I have no desire for a complete set, just a completely beautiful set as close to completion as I can realistically come. Who knows, I could have up to 60 years to make something happen, so don't count me out just yet.
Wow, you even tried to give me a little hint with the lowest mintage coin being right above it. I can tell you it was prudent exercise though, i opened my redbook and learned some new information!
