Agreed - after all, quite a few album makers still use PVC and say that this hard variety is safe for coins. Whether one actually wants to use that or not, is up to each collector. What I wrote was basically a reaction to what Nocents had written ... Christian
Understand that I didn't say it was a good thing either but there has to be some limits on Government regulation... Ruben
verdict so what's the verdict on this then? I've just started collecting (last week my grandad gave me a box of his old swaps - mostly pre-decimal pennies and half crowns and some other stuff) am i safe to put my new collection in the Numis binder mentioned. the outer sheet is definitely PVC but the slider that the coins are in contact with seems to be safe (or at least doesn't smell of anything). does anyone have any experience with leaving silver/bronze in a folder like this long term? does damage only occur when there is direct contact between pvc and metal or will the page holder be close enough for the damage to pass through the air? many thanks, Chris
PVC damages coins after long-term contact when the softener chemical starts leaching out of the plastic. It forms a green sludge on the coin surface that is impossible to clean without damaging the value of the coin. This happened to me shortly after I started my collection, even though I bought the album from a dealer at an organized coin show. I recommend throwing out any coin holders that contain PVC and also any that you aren't sure of. This might be expensive, but it is nothing compared to the heartache of the PVC ruining the coins that you spent so much time and money acquiring.
hmm, yeah probly safest... so does anybody have any long term experience with this type of Numis folder - have you had coins damaged by it or have your coins been safe in there? Chris
