I'll see your 1878-CC dollar and raise you an 1878-P proof:

Did you ever look into the inscription? "Buffington Thanksgiving" .....

If it was one of the last 200 or so minted, that's exactly what the original owner did. They didn't sell all 900 of the proof issues, so the remainder were issued at face value or as bullion.

Yeah, but no luck so far. I secretly hope one day I'll show it to a dealer who will say "You know, I've got a customer named Buffington; his family's old money from southeast Pennsylvania. Hmm..."

I have a hunch that this is the right place to look: http://www.wvculture.org/history/civilwar/buffington01.html

Buffington was the site of a civil war battle on the Ohio/West Virginia border. Have you seen that before?

TBH, I haven't dug into genealogy for this. Buffington is an unusual name, but not that unusual, and I wouldn't have any idea how to dig down to the level of "...Bubba Buffington, patriarch of the clan, who was well-known for his extravagant Thanksgiving feasts, during which he was known to present those in attendance with such lavish gifts as engraved dollar coins." :)
