Now these are some wild die scratches.

    I posted this in hope that this thread would not get sucked into the polishing issue.
    That's not what this coin is about. It's about die damage, die clash and die cracks. I don't see many coins with this much going on.

    Agree. Closest thing I can think of with a die like this is the bashlow restrike confederate cents with the cancelled die. I've seen a lot of cracks too but nothing like this one

    Before things go to far the die has been known for sometime but rather rare most were worn out in circulation .
    Cherry pickers guide #1 notes it well if I recall it's almost in gost category.if I'm correct.
    Re print can be found real cheap in pdf files. Real paper copy prices.it all 1/2 cents though 5 cents

    Ok, I don't know too much about US coinage and therefore may be ignorant of how US coins were struck.

    Assuming if this was struck with a cancelled die, would it not be easier to scratch the field first and then scratch the inside of the engraved design? Unless this did happen and the fields were polished so that the die could be used for a short time span...
