Is this what coin collecting/Numismatics is now? A collection doesn't mean anything if it is not worth a lot monetarily? What a poor way to look at things! I collected coins with my father ever since I could remember. Nothing major, we started out in wheat pennies. I wouldn't trade those memories for anything. If you want to make money, get a second job.
Does anyone else have a kind of exiesential crisis when they reach a (relative) pinnacle of a hobbyist's knowledge? What do I do with my obsessive knowledge of coins and kalashnikovs? I should've concentrated on building a career. Sorry I'm using this thread to vent, but I am on the other side of the grass compared to OP. He is lost with no knowledge, I'm lost after studying for years. Outside of an inheritence, it takes cold hard cash to build a collection. I've bought every coin under $20, then $50 that interests me. The hoarder in me finds it hard to sell 50 mid grade unique type pieces for two or three quality coins. My heirs would appreciate the consolidation of value in the collection I'm sure. I think my depression and crisis related to Numismatics is due to my lack of discipline in vision for my collection and purchasing. Right now I'm thinking of a Top 50 for; Silver Dollars, 1800s US, Ancients, World Silver Crowns, World Coins, respectively. 5 catagoriesX50 leaves me with 250 coins, not including several dansco albums. It almost seems excessive, and trimming the fat to a top 25 would make the remaining collection stand out further. I don't know what's worse, losing an interest in selling coins or losing 50% of their value because I just want them gone, now. I wish I had a buddy with similar tastes to wheel and deal with.
Old US coins grabbed my interest at a tender age. They still trigger imagining whose hands they might have touched. A kind local dealer helped me along and eventually I learned to focus, which 60 years later resulted in a collection of high grade Washington quarters. Due to unforeseen circumstances, this collection must be sold. The actual prices realized leads me to caution anyone looking at numismatics as an investment. Am thinking of assembling as inexpensive type collection to scratch the itch. It is really a captivating "hobby!"
Reading through this thread, I do come off as a jerk. It really wasn't my intent, but it is all there in black and white for good now. I do apologize for being a jerk. I am gonna sit back try to regroup. Kinda rewrap my head around some of this. I had a couple hundred coins out on the kitchen table (about half of a small plastic tub) and I put them all back in the tub last night. Had to get them out of my face. Plus, my amazing wife was starting to get a little bit tired of the mess...
you just got overwhelmed that is all, coin collecting can be a bit overwhelming at times and trust me been there done that before many times but i regrouped ,gathered my thoughts and went back to coin collecting with a new outlook and many new ideas yes one can sell and collect coins also but one must balance those two evenly so one doesn't overwhelm you I've been in the coin collecting/selling biz since 2003 and trust me coins aren't easy to learn about it takes years
I have about 10 coins. It keeps growing from friends that gift me these @Paddy54 @Kentucky @furryfrog02 , mr 9ball and others. Now that’s priceless
Hope your temperature goes down and you find your love for coins again. Take a year off. Buy a motorcycle
I've been playing with altcryptos. Crazy it did 1000% in a day. Check wallstreetbets. Those autistics have made and lost me a good chunk of change, they Are behind Gamestop run and DOGE pump. Turned me onto NAKD pump, got in at .70 Wednesday, took out part of it 3.30 after hours same day. my order history shows I sold 500 shares for .09 in October some decent analysis on there if you can make it through the memes. Find an altcoin you believe in and stick with it. A buddy of mine is heavily invested in chain link, I asked him when he started, 2018. $.10 to $23 today.
Thanks for the encouragement. I was looking at my first motorcycle before my hip replacement last November. Now I'm actually able to get up and go. Trying to decide on a model. Anything to recommend? <500cc , cafe racer styler.. some Yamahas from the 80s have caught my attention
Having a collection (or an accumulation) dropped on you is a hassle. If you need the bucks, sell them. If you don't, leave them around for awhile and dip your toes into collecting/identifying/cataloging them, you might get bitten by the collecting bug. Any questions about them, I'm sure people on here would be glad to answer. Moderation on all things (for most people...I want MORE coins )
