I will skip the massage, but here goes . . . German notgeld (the term literally means "emergency money") is divided into seven (or eight if you include post-WWII notes) categories. These are: 1) 1914 - just as they sound, notes issued in 1914 as substitutes for coinage that disappeared because of WWI. Issued in denominations up to 5 mark by municipalities and businesses. 2) Verkehrausgeben - Circulating issues from 1916-21 issued in denominations of less than 1 mark 3) 1918-20 - Circulating issues issued in denominations of 1 mark and higher 4) Serienscheine - Series notes issued 1920-21 in small denominations. These are the most common type of notgeld. These are the typical, colorful notes issued in series by municipalities and organizations for collectors. Most of these notes were not issued for circulation as their value was so small they would not have been useful for commerce. 5) 1922 - Larger denomination notes from 100-100,000 marks issued by local governments, state (lander) governments and companies as a result of the mild inflation of 1922. 6) 1923 - Hyperinflation notes issued by local governments and businesses during the hyperinflation of 1923. 7) Wertbestandiges Geld - notes issued in October-November 1923 at the start of the currency reform. The value of these notes was pegged to a commodity or the US dollar. All of the useful catalogs are in German. They are well illustrated and most people can make sense of them with the help of a German dictionary. The German catalogs are divided according to the categories found above. Here is a useful website for basic information in English: http://homepages.tesco.net/~notgeldman/frames.htm
