    I've seen ads from someone who repairs holed and other damaged coins. I think the ads were in the Numismatist, which means that the repairer is on the up-and-up.

    a lot of folks had no pockets, coin put on leather or linen/cotton cord and hung around throat

    I have heard many collectors say that a hole is the worst of all numismatic defects.
