Warren, just my opinion but it probably has at least something to do with the photography being atrocious from what I remember. Excellent photos? Maybe it's a different catalog I'm thinking of.

The Berk/England catalog has very good photos. I think it is Berk #4 you are thinking of where the catalog is all Byzantine AE with poor photos. Berk #4 came with a raspberry-colored inset saying "We apologize for certain photographs ...".
