We found a couple nice ancient coins at the Willamantic CT Coin Show this weekend. This first coin has been on my want list for a long time. It comes from Metapontion and includes the barley design in normal relief on the obverse and has the barley design in inverse relief on the reverse. The obverse & reverse align perfectly which seems to promote the theory that the obverse die & reverse die were somehow hinged for alignment purposes.

LUCANIA Metapontum

AR Stater - Nomos

530 - 500 B.C.

25 mm, 7.67 grams

Obv: Ear of barley w/ 7 grains

in norm relief ME-TA.

Rev: Ear of barley w/ 7 grains

inverse relief.

Grade: Perfectly aligned & centered VF w/ cabinet tone

Other: Cf SGC 235.
