I love that coin. It was on my favourites list. At the last moment I decided not to bid on it and I bid on the Marcus Aurelius instead. Congrats on a great coin. I am glad we did not bid against one another.
Here is the coin that i won from the Stoecklin collection. M. Herennius, 108-107 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.99 g, 6 h), Rome. PIETAS Diademed head of Pietas to right; to right, M. Rev. M HERENNI One of the Catanaean brothers running right, bearing his father on his shoulders. Babelon (Herennia) 1. Crawford 308/1a. Sydenham 567. Toned and clear. Very fine. From the collection of W. F. Stoecklin, Amriswil, Switzerland, acquired from Hess AG in Lucerne prior to 1975. I looked this one up beforehand and found out it was also part of the Haeberlin Collection.
A very nice win, Orfew! I like the portrait style (he's looks more robust than usual, don't you think?), the type, the flow lines, and of course the provenance. I got skunked in Nomos, but coincidentally I did snag a M. Aurelius earlier this month: I chose it for the portrait, the reverse isn't nearly as interesting as yours. Though it's a bit ironic, I suppose: Fortuna. His fortunes were about to change dramatically, as he was about to die, and his worse than useless son would inherit the throne!
Congrats, Orfew... great coin and an excellent choice for an MA. It was on my watch list and I briefly considered bidding on it. Other lots took precedence, but I ended up crashing out on all of them.
Thanks, Andrew. It's somewhat compensated for by the fact that I won a couple things in Künker, which is one that usually defies me. I'll post about at least one of those coins... it's something that will interest you, as an historical figures collector.
Less spectacular is the silver that accompanied the RELIG AVG sestertius but showed only the figure of Mercury posed as he is in the temple.
Just received the coin from Switzerland. I took a new photo and included a photo of the handwritten tag as well.
Not sure how I missed seeing your awesome coin the first time around Orfew, but I'm glad to have seen it now and doubly glad it has safely arrived. Here is a dupondis of Aurelius I have showing Victory's shield inscribed VIC GER and a relief panel showing The triumph of Marcus Aurelius after his success against the Germanic tribes
I also won a Marcus Aurelius from the Stoecklin Collection . Coin is still in the mail, so here are the seller´s pictures:
