That 1896 is really nice. Did you really get that for 55.00?

I didn't blow up the image. I just linked it off his site. That isn't coming from my webserver. What you see is what he presents.

This guy is off of Doug's FAQ on dealers.

Well, I can't explain it but certain aspects of the picture posted look different than looking at it on his website. For some reason.

The 96 definitely looks like a premium 63. I'm surprised the PL designation didn't raise the price any more.

BTW, that worthless old, inaccurate red book prices them at $50.00. Just thought I would mention it.

    :)

I don't use the redbook. I like a coin, I buy it if I can afford it.

I lost the opportunity to buy a Type I SLQ which wasn't quite full head but it was full everything else, perfectly toned off white, full shield and leg...for $500.00

I just didn't have the money. Very frustrating.

    Ruben,

You do know that the off white toning which you refer to as perfect is a silver sulfide layer just like those that create rainbow toning only thinner don't you. I am not sure how a thin layer of corrosion can be perfect, but a thicker film be horrible. Or are your past statements about rainbow toning just in jest? In poker, we call that needling your opponent.

I don't expect a coin that is nearly 90 years old and which is 90% silver to be without tone unless it was altered (cleaned).

So, when I say it was perfectly toned, I mean that it doesn't look polished or newly minted, but has some protective toning. As far as needling, if its anything like raising six kinds and sitting at the dinner table with them all, I'm an expert.

as per rainbow toning .... lets be polite and say it isn't corrosion, but it's the loss of metal surface do to oxidative reactions out of control.... which slowly eats at the metal

He is indeed. I personally know the man. He is extremely trustworthy, highly regarded in all numismatic circles, and someone that I would recommend to anyone to buy coins from.

That said, he did not grade the coin, he is merely selling it. If there are any disagreements regarding the grade assigned to this coin then it should be with the TPG - not the seller.

And for what it is worth, I agree - that coin should not be in a 66 slab.
