I had the same thoughts. I like it, but I like the blast white coin better...although a better pic of the white coin might change those feelings.

    Both coins are nice.

However, my preference is for #2.

I'd go for the NGC piece.

    Okay, the contest is over.
    What are the grades?
I'll bet that the PCGS is graded higher.

1837 lg date Dime should have some color to it. so I would pick the PCGS

Toning & the eye of the beholder

Thanks to everyone that gave an opinion & comments. I can now live better with the decision I made about the no-stars dime. We basically have 10 people liking the coin in the NGC holder and 5 liking the PCGS holder. Some very respectable people made comments for each holder.

The PCGS coin did have its luster hidden under the toning. We had NCS conserve the PCGS coin by removing the environmental damage & the result is the coin in the NGC holder. Yes, it is the same coin in both holders. It really troubled me kick-off this conservation a couple years ago but most of you have made me feel better with the decision. It was a tough decision because you can never go back to the original coin.

The original coin was not ugly but I felt that the toning was hiding something better underneath. The same numerical grade held before & after the conservation but I prefer the look of the conserved coin myself.

    Very best regards,

Wow... great post and nice example of NCS's conservation efforts. Oh, and sneaky trick. :)

While you are entitled to do as you wish, it sickens me to think that you (what I consider) ruined a perfectly good and original coin.

I would have never guessed it was the same coin.

collect89 still wants your large date dime. Here are pictures of all my no-stars. If one is good, then several might be better. These pictures were posted in the Gobrecht thread a week back.

you got me, I would never have thought it was the same coin. I was going to post and say that I liked the NGC coin better.

NOW I get it - it is okay for NGC to conserve(clean) a coin, but if we send one in it gets body bagged. Makes me stop and think. :)

rzage What Goes Around Comes Around .

Mark h , if one of us sent in the conserved coin , I'm sure either tpg would have slabbed it , they only BB the badly cleaned coins , the trick is knowing when and how to do it , which unfortunately is a guarded secret .
    rzage .

BTW , I don't think the coin needed cleaning but must say I like it better that way .

It is also worth noting that you (presumably) haven't seen the before or after coins in-hand and are making the judgement based on an old "before" scan and a new "after" photo -- a recipe for mistaken assessments, IMO.

Respectfully...Mike (who is still crying about that ruined coin and wishes Collect89 would offer me any coins he intends on sending to NCS so I can save them from the dipping pot. :) )

Lets find out - send me the coin I will crack it and send it to PCGS.

LOL - I like that - "the guarded secret". One of these days I will crack it. :)

    Boo hoo. :(

Leadfoot cries a tear when a coin, particularly an Elisaberg, gets dipped.

    :(

Coins can be properly cleaned...and they can still be slabbed. Look at all the blast white Morgan Dollar's that we see in slabs. Someone cleaned them. Those coins toned over time...but before they were slabbed the coins would have been dipped by someone to remove the toning. The problem is when coins are improperly cleaned, they are damaged and cannot be slabbed. Anyone with the proper skill can clean a coin and have it slabbed, as long as they clean properly. The people at NCS are highly experienced with this.

I wonder if they ever do damage the coin, they have to have problems at some frequency, right?
