The Nickel is the longest circulating, same composition, and same weight coin in America. There was only the one change to 35% silver during WW2.
Its possible for it to remain its original look but (condition)matters the most and without pictures we would just be guessing all day.
My best guess is yours might be uncirculated or high grade and looks like this which is not an error it just keept its original look and state.
@martin regan. Welcome to Coin Talk. You should start a new thread for your 44 S nickel. Also, post photos of the coin with clear closeups of what you think is the error.
