    How would I go about getting an honest appraisal from someone..? I don't know how to go about this. I don't want someone to tell me it's nothing and offer to buy it cheap and then it turn out to be worth more. I'm not even sure I want to sell it but I would love to know what's wrong with it. Who would I ask?

    I wouldn't waste too much more time on this nickel. The type of damaged shown is more than likely after it left the mint. But even if it happened during the minting process and is an error, the coin is in such circulated shape that the premium at most would be a couple of dollars, IMO. Likely just worth 5 cents. I recommend setting it aside for a couple of months. Look at other coins posted here and that you find.
    Then once you gain some experience, pull the coin out and look at it again with more experienced eyes. You won't be missing out on anything, the coin is already more than 30 years old.
