He was the last ruler of the undivided empire, as upon his death Honorius became ruler of the west and Arcadius emperor of the east. He spent much of his time campaigning against the Goths with mixed success. He was the first emperor who was forced into public penance by Bishop Ambrose of Milan following a massacre of innocents. He was excommunicated and forced to ride backwards on a donkey around the walls of Thessalonica before he was re-admitted to the eucharist. </p><p><br /></p><p>He allowed the destruction of two famous temples of antiquity - the temple of Apollo at Delphi and the Serapeum in Alexandria by mobs. He also closed the altar of Victory in Rome and disbanded the Vestal Virgins. He issued an edict proclaiming the Nicene creed the one official version of Christianity.
