The ghost like mess on his face, and the other toning is really there.   At this point, it's much easier to see it in a photo, since it's "ghostly".    Most of the pictures here on coin talk are taken to show off the coin, make it appear as attractive as possible.   I think that in the process of taking coin pics, sometime people must be suprised by what shows up after they press the shutter release.     I think posting GOOD pictures of UGLY coins might be as informative as the show-off pics.
