I just finished cleaning this Camp Gate. It looks real good. As always, comments and corrections are welcome. Constantine II AE3, FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS, campgate, 2 turrets, 7 layers, dots in top layer, star above, no doors. NO DOTS ON THIS ONE Mintmark: SMTSB. RIC VII Thessalonica 158, rated C3
That is my thought also. And, being almost an Octogenarian, I never think about it in time. But I plan to start doing some of that. I've had some real crumby looking coins come out real nice. Thanks for the feedback.
That's great! The campgates that I have tried to clean were god-awful in terms of surface. Definitely no silvering left. Congratulations!
Personally, I find the SHT in the exergue offensive. We know what they meant. Those snarky mint slaves--you can't turn your back on them for a minute. Okay, just kidding. Nice cleaning job. The coin looks great.
Great job cleaning that one, @Inspector43 ! Here's one from Heraclea. Constantine II as Caesar, AD 317-337 Roman Æ Centenionalis; 3.86 gm; 18.2 mm Heraclea, AD 327-329 Obv: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, draped and cuirassed bust, right Rev: PROVIDENT-IAE-CAESS, campgate with two turrets, no doors; star above. Dot left field; SMHЄ in exergue. Refs: RIC 96; RCV 17241; Cohen 164.
Nice job cleaning, @Inspector43 ... I just do not possess the patience. Here is a Crispy Critter Campgate: RI Crispus 317-326 CE AE Folles Caesar in Trier Campgate - Heraclea mint
@Alegandron Thanks for the feedback. Mine don't all end up that way. The one you posted looks just fine to me.
That's a job well done. Especially the reverse looks good, with the silvering still on it. Here's mine (Constanine I):
I haven't been at this a long time. How can you tell when they both have the same markings? And, they are both Thessalonica 158?
Because the legend reads FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C. It's easy to confuse CONSTANTINVS with CONSTANTIVS, just as it's easy to confuse MAXIMIANVS with MAXIMINVS. You simply wrote Constantine II in the first part of your post by mistake. The rest of the coin is attributed properly.
