Posts: 1,515 Series dates are not like the dates you see on coins. They have very little to do with when the notes were issued. Up until some time in the 1980's this was how the rule went.

The series date was the year in which either a major change was approved in the design, or if BOTH the signatures of the Secretary of the Treasury and the Treasurer of the US changed. If just one signature changed then the letter after the series date was changed. So for your note the last major change occurred in 1934 when both signatures changed from W O Woods/Ogden L Mills to W A Julian/Henry Morgenthau.

The series date has little to do with the date .

Just For Example... $1.00 Series 1935H Silver Certificates were amongst the last issued with a final release date of Oct 4 1963. Only the 1957B Has a later release date of Nov 6 1963.

I see the SHOP AT HOME moron Robert Chambers claim that 1935 series $1.00 SC are 70+ years old. Not so. At least the 1935

The series date on currency has very little to do with the year it was actually printed and released. DO NOT think of coins with a date.

What do you all think? the serial number is fairly low, he also has large face $100.00 with a 00009971 number, should I pick this up also?

i like the $1 and the $10, but the $100 i would let go - that is, unless you have $100 that could easily be set aside by buying it :)

post pics if you get it :)

I went ahead and picked it up, just turned in the strap of singles that I have been looking through and swapping for another strap everyday for the last several months.

Bit of a crease, but it will do until a better one can be found.

Why would somebody use a counterfeit pens on such an old note?
Will this stay on the note forever?

    Thanks for looking

Wow, beautiful notes man! My guess would be, since these don't have the security strip or watermark, they used the pen to make sure it is real. Sad they made it so large though. Even sadder they just put it back in circulation, even though it being an old note! :( But, there loss is your gain. And I think I did hear something about the marks do go away after awhile. But could be wrong. Could always use bleach to get it out. :D :D :D Just joking. :D

OK, don't remember where on CT I posted the story about this note, but I did post it somewhere. Long story short, a teller was convinced this note was counterfeit. Supposedly marked it up real good with the counterfeit pen, nice and black. It was sent to the secret service where they determined it was legit. I even got a copy of the letter from the secret service, so this note has a nice story behind it.

It was marked up with the pen on or before 06/27/07 (date on note of when it was sent to secret service). Today, I really don't see any trace of that stinking pen.

So, there is hope for your note too.

The fact that the note was sent back to the bank means it was legit, but I did manage to get a copy of both the Counterfeit Note Report form and the Form Letter reply (and literally, it is just a form letter with one blank filled in and a reference to report overprinted on it) as this note now has a really good story behind it.
