I have had this one for awhile and was just wondering what you would grade it. It was very hard to get any decent pictures of because it is toned. I will most likely send it in for grading in the near future. I just thought it would be interesting to see what everyone thought about it. Thanksin advance for any opinions. Fastfun1111
Is that corrosion or other on the coin or just an optical effect from the mottled toning! Not to use the big "C" word here but the surfaces just don't look right. Also, the Date is very odd with the "8" being very thin and offset (higher than) from the "1" ... The "3" also appears offset but I think that it is an optical illusion created by offset of the "1"... I hope that it is authentic and if the appearnace is due to the mottled toning, then it would be best to send the coin to NCS for restoration/conservation and grading either by them or NGC. Frank
Frank: Breen mentions a 'center of 8 thin, curve top to 5.' He also lists (with it) that there are 3 varieties of this description.
It is just toning, there is no corrosion. It was very difficult to get the pics any where close to show the actual detail of the coin. In hand it is a much nicer looking coin. Thanks for the replys
The 3 being offset and lower than the other digits is normal. I would have to look up the variety for the date, but it is a common feature. As for the coin, it looks like an AU-55/58 coin to me.
fastfun, Based on your and the other's responses and depending upon the rarity of this coin with the thin "8", it might be best to send the coin to NCS! If in the restoration/conservation of the coin, NCS can or will remove the mottled toning, it would do much for the eye appeal of the coin! Frank
I'll be a contrarian. I like the toning- a bunch! I'd call it AU50, and I wouldn't change a thing. Nice coin! Mike
nice example of the LM10 marriage..i would go XF+ here is my AU set piece. it also displays a similar mottled look. she is much darker in hand, a nice caramel color under a nice thick, black crust.
