Did you ever hear of putting raw coins in 2x2 staple mounted cardboard/mylar holders? This way nobody has to handle them with their raw hands. Limiting one's collecting to slabbed coins only limits choices and opportunities to take a great raw coin to be slabbed. If you are a confident grader you will have no issues buying uncertified coins.
Maybe a little off topic, But how long have PCGS and NGC been in business? ANACS claims to be Americas "oldest grading service"
NGC was founded in '87 PCGS was in 1985 ANACS way before that, I think early 70's??? 1972? ANACS used to use just photo's and keep the coins raw, AND graded both sides, like 1880-S Morgan dollar MS-65/66 and send along a black and white pic with your coin in a flip
